Every cent of the money raised will go toward helping the people of Gandou, Haiti, perhaps the poorest community of its size in the Western Hemisphere. Articles to be auctioned include a bit of everything, gift certificates, baskets, tickets to sporting events, artistic crafts, toys and much more. The best soup of the evening, as selected by popular vote, will receive a prize. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring a crock pot full of their favorite soup and join in the competition. Anyone wanting more information about the Gandou Ministry or the silent auction is welcome to attend its next general meeting in the basement of St. Anthony’s Schad Hall Wednesday, October 8, at 6:30 PM. Men Take a Stand

The Healthy Communities Initiative and its Domestic Violence Action Team in partnership with Turning Point Domestic Violence Services is preparing to host the third annual Men Take a Stand event in honor of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Helping to promote an end to violence, the City of Columbus will be lighting the Second Street bridge with purple lights and Domestic Violence Action Team members are installing purple lights on the downtown trees.

Men Take a Stand is designed to recognize men in the community who have pledged to be positive male role models for healthy relationships. The event runs from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Oct. 1 on the steps of City Hall in downtown Columbus. Male members of the community who have made the pledge will have their names called and stand together to demonstrate that domestic violence is not just a women’s issue. Jeffery Bucholtz, a speaker and trainer from the national organization We End Violence, will offer a brief presentation.

The event is open to the public and any gentleman who wishes to be recognized and join the group is welcome. In order to be recognized, please email your name and any work affiliation to cmorse@crh.org by Sept. 30. Learn more about the Domestic Violence Action Team at www.whatsyourreach.org.
