The Philharmonic Presents…“A Farewell Gift to Columbus”

Philharmonic violinist Matvey Lapin and his wife pianist Katya Kramer-Lapin have lived in Columbus Indiana for the past ten years.  Matvey has performed with the Philharmonic for the past several seasons as first violin and is serving as concertmaster with the Columbus Symphony.  Katya has performed with both the Philharmonic and the Columbus Symphony.  They will soon move to Virginia where Matvey is a faculty member with the Virginia Tech Outreach Program and Renaissance Music Academy of Virginia.

As a way of expressing their gratitude to the Columbus community for its generous and enthusiastic support of the arts, and music in particular, they will present a free concert of very different styles and schools of music.  Matvey and Katya “find it fascinating that it is possible to travel in time and space…while sitting in the concert hall.”  So, during this journey, their music will transport you to Vienna at the dawn of the 19th century with Beethoven; to Moscow of the mid 1960’s with Alfred Schnittke; and finally to the very late years of Maurice Ravel in Paris.

Matvey Lapin, a Russian native, completed his conservatory training in St. Petersburg and is currently completing his DM in violin performance at IU Jacobs School of Music. He is a former member of the Grammy-nominated St. Petersburg String Quartet.  Katya Kramer-Lapin enjoys a career as a solo performer as well as a chamber musician and has performed across the U.S., Europe, Asia and Russia.  Katya is currently on the faculty of DePauw School of Music and along with her husband is a faculty member at the Ameropa International Summer Festival and Mastercourses in Prague.   Duo Amabile, a chamber music duet formed by Matvey and Katya performs across the U.S. and Europe.

Philharmonic Music Director, Dr. David Bowden, says of Matvey and Katya, “…they have been dedicated contributors to our community for ten years.  Both are superb musicians who really connected with the people of Columbus and have made a significant impact on the arts scene in our region” and that “Matvey has led both the Columbus Symphony and the Columbus Philharmonic with distinction and great musicality.”

Please join Matvey and Katya as they celebrate the friendships they have formed and their love of this community’s dedication to music.  Free Concert – reception follows the concert, no RSVP required
