Columbus Area Arts Council Iron Pour Worskshops

The Columbus Area Arts Council is pleased to announce Meltdown: Iron Pour & Glass Forming Workshops. The Iron Pour will be held from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Saturday, August 24. The Glass Forming workshops will be held from noon to 7:00 PM on Friday, August 23 and from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 24. Both events will be held in the Columbus Arts District near Jacksson Contemporary Art at 1030 Jackson Street.

One of the most popular aspects of the iron pour is the opportunity for community members to create their own piece of art using “scratch blocks.” The blocks are made of sand that is held together with resin. Participants can carve a design into the sand which will be cast in iron at the Saturday night iron pour. Scratch blocks are now available for purchase by calling the Arts Council at 812-376-2539. The cost is $25 per block with a limit of two per household. At the time of this press release only two spaces were available for the glass forming workshops.

Tools and instructions on carving the blocks will be given at workshops, which are conducted by Chicago-based artist Jim Brenner and a group of ten national artists working in metal sculpture. The workshops will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21; Thursday, August 22; and Friday, August 23.

As an extension of Columbus Area Arts Council’s Meltdown: Iron Pour & Glass Forming Workshops, Jacksson Contemporary Art will feature the work of artists working with metal, stone, and glass. 3D works from artists associated with the iron pour and glass forming workshops, as well as other invited artists, will be featured in the exhibit, entitled Out of the Earth: metal, stone, and glass. The show opens on August 2 and runs through August 24. Jacksson Contemporary Art is located at 1030 Jackson Street, Columbus.

Meltdown: Iron Pour and Glass Forming Workshops is being held in conjunction with ArtFEST. Now in its fourth year, ArtFEST is a popular annual art festival that features the work of local and regional fine artists and artisans. Organized and produced by Columbus-based artist Bob Anderson, 120 booths will line Washington Street from Third to Fifth, and Fourth Street from Jackson to Franklin streets in the heart of the Columbus Arts District. ArtFEST hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, August 24. The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Brass Ensemble will perform a wide variety of music on the corner of Franklin and Washington Streets from 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM during ArtFEST. Musical selections will include pops, classics, Dixieland, and Big Band Jazz.

Visitors to Meltdown and ArtFEST will also be able to view three other art exhibits on August 23 and 24. YuYu Columbus a community collaborative art project featuring Boston-based artist Mark Cooper will be on display at Indiana University Center for Art+Design (IUCA+D) through September 12. Columbus Museum of Art and Design will feature a photographic retrospective by Jonathan Wilson at the Gallery at Hotel Indigo through September 30. While diverse and eclectic in subject matter, Wilson’s work attempts to showcase his singular viewpoint and approach to art and humanity.
