Our Hospice Concert: Kansas

The legendary 1970s American progressive rock band Kansas will headline the 2014 Our Hospice Concert over Labor Day weekend at Mill Race Park, Columbus. The free community concert on August 30 is Our Hospice’s largest fundraiser to benefit patients with an advanced illness and their families.

The 28th annual concert is sponsored by Faurecia and Columbus Regional Health, and is supported by Columbus Area Arts Council.

Kansas is best known for their stellar hits Dust in the Wind and Carry on Wayward Son. Kansas band members who take center stage at the August 30 concert are Phil Ehart (drums, percussion), one of the original members who formed the group in 1970 in his hometown of Topeka, Kansas; Richard Williams (guitars) and Steve Walsh (keyboards, synthesizers, percussion, and vocals), who joined Ehart and Kansas in 1973; and Billy Greer (bass, vocals), who joined the group in 1985; and David Ragsdale (violin, guitars, vocals, 1991–97, 2006–present).

Celebrating their 40th year as a band in 2013, Kansas’ first public statement appeared on their self-titled album in 1974. “From the beginning, we considered ourselves and our music different and we hope we will always remain so.” Little did this legendary rock group realize that back in the early ‘70′s, what seemed to be “different,” was actually ahead of its time. This “garage band” from Topeka was discovered by Wally Gold, who worked for Don Kirshner, and released their first album in 1974. The band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show) and a million-selling gold single, ‘Dust in the Wind.’ KANSAS appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ‘70′s and ‘80′s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. In fact, ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ was the #2 most Played Track on classic rock radio in 1995 and went to #1 in 1997.
