Biggest Block Party Ever
Produced by Columbus Area Arts Council and sponsored by Johnson-Witkemper Insurance, Biggest Block Party Ever is an annual fundraiser for the Arts Council. Held on the last Saturday of July, the block party includes three music stages and 12 bands performing throughout the evening. The entertainment line-up includes local and regional acts playing a range of musical styles from rock and country to blues and soul.
Headlining this year’s event is Hunter Smith Band. When Super Bowl Champion punter Hunter Smith decided to retire from football after 12 years in the NFL he did so with a plan in mind. The first step was to strategically put together an eclectic group of musicians then couple them with an eclectic catalogue of self written biographical songs. Next came the challenge of melding a singer-songwriter approach with a very serious and unique country rock sound. He pulled it off. It is called the Hunter Smith Band.
This year’s lineup:
Dunlap Stage (The Commons)
5:30–6:30 PM monetary winner of Battle of the Bands
6:15–7:15 PM Bigalow P (Motown, R&B)
7:30–8:30 PM Hudson Hornet (Rockabilly)
8:45–10:00 PM Justin Slager Band (original and Classic Rock covers)
Johnson-Witkemper Stage (Acoustic)
6:00–6:45 PM The McGuires (Rock duo)
7:00–7:45 PM Anna Miller
Bud Light Stage (PNC Lot)
6:00–7:00 PM TOG Band (Rock covers)
7:15–8:15 PM No Soup 4 U (Rock covers)
8:30–9:30 PM Shiny Penny (Indie Rock)
10:00–11:30 PM Hunter Smith Band (Country Rock)

Katie McBurnett 5K
The Katie McBurnett 5K is in memory of Katie McBurnett, Columbus resident, who passed away on Sept. 18, 2012, after having received a life-saving heart transplant on March 29, 2007. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at beautiful Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. Registration can be made online at signmeup.com/92239, and the cost of the race will be $20 before September 1. This cost will include a t-shirt and a goodie bag. All proceeds will be used to purchase Cough Buddy animals for children at Riley Hospital for Children. Cough Buddy animals are stuffed animals with a hard back that serve as splints for patients who have recently had abdomen or chest surgery. Katie received a Cough Buddy in 2007 at Riley, but the hospital as since stopped giving them to children. We want to get them back in the arms of the kids who need them the most. Any questions can be emailed to rememberkatiedonatelife@gmail.com or by calling Lindsey Thompson at 812-552-3649.
