Saturday Sampler: Cabinet of Curiosities

What do a mermaid, a unicorn tail, and a two-headed cow have in common?  They are all the types of “artifacts” included in traveling displays of oddities which were a popular form of entertainment before movies.  Check out some of the strange items in the Bartholomew County Historical Society’s collection and make a curiosity to take home that will be sure to impress your friends! Our Saturday Samplers are monthly family friendly workshops catered towards small children.

We will provide: Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and all the “fixins” including some Boca Burgers and Turkey Burgers for those who prefer them. Please bring a Side Dish to share, Tableware, and your drink of choice (Alcohol is not allowed in park. Feel free to bring a lawn chair and an outdoor activity. )
RSVP to pridealliancecolumbus@gmail.com  is appreciated but not required. Please indicate if you are a hot dog and/or hamburger person, or if you have other dietary restrictions so we have an idea on how many of each are needed.

Directions:

From Indy, Take I-65 South to Exit 68. Turn left onto State Road 46 East. Go approximately one and a half mile, be in left lane crossing bridge. Merge in to Lindsay Street, Sears/Mall will be on the right, turn left first street after Sears (New Indigo Hotel on the left) and you will head into the park.

Please extend an invitation to our friends at PFLAG, ICC, and Peace Fellowship and Columbus North Gay Straight Alliance, Columbus East Gay Straight Alliance and any other group that might be interested. (Use attached doc if necessary.)

We will have Registration forms for membership (both new and renewals).

Sharon Randall

Syndicated columnist Sharon Randall, whose column appears weekly in The Republic will talk about “Reading, Writing and Life.”  As a winner of numerous professional awards, she proudly notes that she has also “scrubbed a lot of toilets, washed a lot of towels and burned a lot of cookies.” She credits her training as a writer to “15 years as a reporter, some 30 years as a wife and a mother, and more than 50 years as a daughter, a sister, a friend . . . and now a nana!”  Funding for Sharon’s visit comes from the Heritage Fund, Hope EDIT committee, Bartholomew County Library Associates, Hope PTO and Julie Del Genio.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m.  Sharon will also present Sept 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Hope Moravian Church, 202 Main Street in Hope.

Past to Present Trends in North American Archaeology

Archaeologist Rick Jones will give a presentation on the development of North American archaeology as a discipline and its studies, from speculation to scientific inquiry, with corresponding examples of the various themes and topics in Indiana.  Afterwards, there will be artifact identification.  Bring an artifact or two to show, discuss, and have identified.  September is Archaeology Month in Indiana.

One Stroke Painting

Learn to blend, shade, and highlight, all in one stroke.  Participants will paint love birds with flowers on a plaque.  Instructor Marilyn Tentler is a Level 2 One Stroke Certified Instructor.  Fee covers all supplies. $25 fee covers all supplies.  For ages 13 and up.  Must register at mybcpl.org or call 379-1266.
