GarageBand for the Beginner

Music production can be a very complicated process especially if you don’t know where to start. GarageBand is a free app for tablets and smart phones and is a great way to get started! Curtis Hartwell, the library’s Social Media Coordinator, will cover the basics on how to start creating awesome music and discuss all the in- app instruments, their functions and how to compose your first song.  Bring a tablet with the GarageBand app installed to participate.

Improve Your Health One Bite at a Time

Are biotech foods safe to eat?  Most of us have eaten genetically modified foods without knowing it, but are they safe?  Experts say 60% to 70% of processed foods on U.S. grocery shelves have genetically modified ingredients.  Carolyn Behrman, Natural Choices for Healthful Living, will chat about these foods and if they are good for you or work against you.

The Single Man’s Housecleaning Playbook

Columbus native Sid Showalter returns to town to chat about his book The Single Man’s Housecleaning Playbook.  The book is a quick and simple guide to correctly cleaning your home like a pro and is for gals too, not just the guys.  Drawn from Showalter’s life experiences, research and trial and error the first part of the book tells the story of what the author went through while cleaning his house after his house cleaner broke her arm. “The Playbook” puts together strategies, executions and lists of the equipment necessary into a handy and useful game plan.

Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame Induction Nominations

Nominations for Inaugural Induction are Being Accepted Through September 1, 2014

The Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame (IMVHOF) is calling for nominations for its first group of honorees.

Its board of directors is compiled of representatives from the business, government and retired military sectors. The Chairman of the board, Russell H. Dowden, Jr., COL, USA (Retired) was inducted into the Arkansas Military Veterans Hall of Fame in 2011 as that is his home state. Now a Hoosier, Mr. Dowden formed the idea of creating a similar organization here.

Up to fifteen veterans will be honored for military service achievements and/or community contributions. To be eligible, a nominee must meet any one of these criteria:
> Been born in Indiana
> Entered military service in Indiana
> Lived in Indiana for a minimum of eight years

All branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, all ages, living or deceased, and males and females will be considered equally. The complete nomination packet and criteria can be found at imvhof.com. Nominations will be accepted through end of day September 1, 2014.

The first induction ceremony will take place on November 7, 2014 at the Garrison at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence, IN. Event details will be available on the website as it nears.
