Columbus Area Arts Council Presents
The Right to Dream
A one-person play recounting the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement
Monday, January 20, 2014, 2:00 PM, FREE, The Commons, Columbus
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Columbus Area Arts Council presents The Right to Dream at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 20, 2014 in The Commons, 300 Washington Street, Columbus. This event is provided free of charge to the community.
The Right to Dream is a one-person play that recreates an African American student’s coming of age in Mississippi during the 1950s and 1960s, detailing the struggles and sacrifices for civil rights in America. This compelling story mixes live theatre with archival photographs and video footage to create a uniquely engaging performance that illuminates the issues of civil rights. Narrated by a boy named Raymond, the story tells his journey from his daily experiences with racism as a child to meeting civil rights leaders Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. After meeting these leaders, Raymond becomes more involved in the movement and participates in voter registration drives, the March on Washington, and the March from Selma to Montgomery.
