BEECH GROVE, Ind. - One Beech Grove Police Department officer is dead and another wounded after they were dispatched to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance in an apartment on Monday, February 16, just after 6 p.m.

As officers encountered the subjects involved at the doorway to the residence on Diplomat Court, a man fired shots at them from inside. Two officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to an area hospital.

Despite life-saving efforts, Officer Bryan Elliott succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. The second officer is in stable condition.

The suspect fled on foot. Several law enforcement agencies searched the area, and at around 10:15 p.m., the suspect was found and arrested by members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) SWAT Team at a different apartment building in the same area. He was identified as 47-year-old Kenneth T. Johnson.

The investigation into the circumstances of this incident is ongoing. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation with support from IMPD.
