Edinburgh man dies in UTV accident in Columbus

Courtesy-CPD

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Columbus Police Department (CPD) is investigating the death of a 77-year-old Edinburgh man following a crash at 25th Street and Home Avenue on Monday.

At 12:10 p.m., officers and other first responders were called to the intersection of 25th Street and Home Avenue for a personal injury accident. When CPD arrived, they found that one of the drivers had suffered multiple injuries, including some to his head.

Emergency medical personnel transported the driver by ambulance and then by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital, where he later died.

The initial investigation by detectives and the accident reconstruction team appears to show that a pickup truck was traveling westbound on 25th Street, approaching Home Avenue. A 16-year-old male was driving the truck. A 77-year-old man, operating a UTV, was traveling south on Home Avenue and stopped at the light at 25th Street.

Based on witness testimony and collected video, the light turned green for Home Avenue traffic, and the UTV continued south into the intersection. The truck hit the UTV, fatally injuring the driver. No one else was seriously hurt.

The intersection was closed for several hours. The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has any information about the crash, call CPD at 812-376-2600.
