Courtesy-National Weather Service

SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis has extended the "Extreme Heat Warning" for most of central and southern Indiana for another 24 hours. It will now expire on Friday at 8 p.m.

Dangerous heat and humidity will continue to create hazardous conditions for the remainder of the week for residents in Bartholomew, Johnson, Jackson, Jennings, Brown, Decatur, Shelby, and Morgan Counties.

There is an Extreme Heat Risk (Level 4 of 4) with Heat index values climbing to over 100° each day, with peak heat indices of 105° to 110° expected on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Overnight temperatures will only drop to around 80°, providing little relief from the heat and causing an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations.

NWS recommends that you:

  • Limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded locations.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Check on elderly family members, young children, neighbors, and anyone without adequate cooling.
