TRAFALGAR, Ind. - The 89th Indiana State (ISP) Police Lateral Recruit Academy completed its graduation ceremony in the Indiana Government Center South Auditorium on Thursday afternoon, March 19. Zaccary T. Sheppard, of Trafalgar, was one of the new troopers sworn in.

ISP Superintendent Anthony Scott gave the commencement address, and Mjr. General Lawrence Muennich, Adjutant General of the Indiana National Guard, delivered the oath of office to the seven new State Police Troopers. Each was then presented with their badge.

This Recruit Class consisted entirely of full-time merit law enforcement officers, all of whom had a minimum of three continuous years of law enforcement service. The recruit's lateral academy was nine weeks of intense training that included criminal and traffic law, de-escalation, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, firearms, and a host of other academic subjects related to modern policing.

Each graduating Trooper will be assigned to an ISP State Police Post and will spend the next three months working side by side with a series of experienced Field Training Officers. Johnson County's Zaccary Sheppard was assigned to the Bloomington Post.

After field training, the new Troopers will be assigned a State Police patrol vehicle and will begin solo patrol in their assigned district.
