COLUMBUS, Ind. — City officials are taking action following rising concerns from residents over the safety of electric bikes and motorized scooters operating on local pedestrian trails.
During Tuesday's Columbus City Council meeting, a resident voiced safety concerns regarding teenagers operating high-speed e-bikes and e-scooters along the People Trails near Rocky Ford and Marr Road, pointing to growing hazards for pedestrians.
In response, Executive Director of Administration Eric Fry confirmed that e-bike safety has quickly become a priority issue across the city. A specialized city working group, including representatives from the Planning Department, Parks Department, Police Department, and City Council, is scheduled to meet August 31 to draft potential policy updates.
City leaders are considering several key measures to address trail safety, including:
- Evaluating citywide ordinance updates and formal speed restrictions on pedestrian trails
- Determining enforcement protocols, such as potential impoundment for non-compliant or illegal vehicles
- Launching public education campaigns to inform riders and parents of trail rules and safe operation standards
The city working group will review options during its August 31 session before presenting formal recommendations to the council.
