COLUMBUS, Ind. - Columbus city employees and elected officials are inline for a cost-of-living adjustment next year after the Columbus City Council approved the first readings of several 2027 salary ordinances on Tuesday, September 1.

The proposed ordinances include a 3.5% cost-of-living increase across city departments based on the July 2026 consumer price index. The measure covers sworn police and fire personnel, civilian staff, and elected officials.

The council voted 7-2 to pass the first reading of the elected officials' salary increase, with council members Elaine Hilber and Chris Bartels voting against the measure citing a desire for further budget collaboration.
