COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) has welcomed six new members, bringing the department to full staffing. Columbus Mayor Mary Ferdon swore in the new hires at Tuesday's Board of Public Works and Safety meeting at Columbus City Hall.
The firefighters will undergo an intensive eight-week training program. In addition to a department familiarization period, the training will include daily physical fitness exercises, engine company operations, truck company operations, firefighter survival, search and rescue, rapid intervention team training, and firefighter health and wellness.
After completing the training program, they will receive station and shift assignments.
The latest additions to CFD are all certified EMTs:
- Benjamin Bonyhay, 25, is a 2023 Purdue University graduate and previously served with the Richmond Fire Department
- Cody Ghuman, 29, a Columbus North High School graduate, has worked at the Columbus Township and Clifford Volunteer Fire Departments
- Benjamin L. Peek, 30, is a Seymour resident and has served with the Hamilton Township and the Crothersville Volunteer Fire Departments
- Enrique Josmar Callejas Santos, 22, is a 2023 graduate of Edinburgh Community High School and has experience with the Edinburgh and Bargersville Fire Departments
- Roy Allen Schuder, 30, of Hope, is a 2014 graduate of Edinburgh Community High School and served with the German Township Volunteer Fire Department
- Adler Yentz, 23, is a graduate of Columbus North High School and has been with the New Whiteland Fire Department since 2024
