COLUMBUS, Ind. - Columbus Parks and Recreation has announced plans to renovate Freedom Field, the city’s largest accessible playground on Parkside Drive, for $1.3 million, with construction slated for early 2027.
The new design will enhance inclusive recreation and emphasize integrated, ground-level play elements.
“Integrated ground-level play allows children to stay connected with their peers and supports a wider range of abilities,” said Nikki Murphy, Director of Columbus Parks & Recreation. The new layout replaces traditional tile surfaces with durable, sustainable turf, thus minimizing long-term maintenance.
Originally planned for 2026, the construction timeline was adjusted to avoid facility closures during peak usage. The department secured funding through capital funds and community donations. The proposal awaits formal approval from the Columbus Parks and Recreation Board.
Beyond this project, the department is collaborating with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation to evaluate accessibility across the entire park system. This initiative uses geographic data to guide future improvements, ensuring inclusive play opportunities remain a cornerstone of Columbus’s public spaces.
