COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Police Department (CPD) has issued nearly 400 traffic citations since the beginning of September as part of its ongoing "Operation Safe Driving" enforcement initiative.

At Tuesday's Board of Works and Safety meeting, Deputy Chief Martindale emphasized that officers are primarily targeting dangerous driving behaviors, including excessive speeding, running red lights, and mobile phone use behind the wheel.

City leaders and police officials noted that distracted driving remains a primary cause of intersection violations across the city.

CPD reported that while drivers put away phones when emergency vehicles are visible, targeted patrols will continue throughout the month to enforce traffic laws and lower speeds on major roadways.

Residents seeking more information on local traffic safety initiatives and enforcement updates can contact the Columbus Police Department.
