COLUMBUS, Ind. - Columbus Parks and Recreation on Wednesday announced the official completion of the turf conversion of six baseball and softball diamonds at Lincoln Park, marking a major investment in the future of local athletics, tournament tourism, and community recreation.
The $1.5 million project was made possible through significant regional partnerships, including $1.125 million in READI grant funding and a $300,000 contribution from Visit Columbus.
“These investments reflect a shared belief in the power of high‐quality recreational facilities to strengthen our community,” said Columbus Parks and Recreation Director Nikki Murphy. “We are deeply grateful to Visit Columbus for their continued support and partnership.” City leadership also played a pivotal role in securing READI funding, and Murphy thanked Mayor Ferdon and the City Administration for their support.
Operational and economic strategy drove the decision to install turf. Lincoln Park’s diamonds host extensive local programming and serve as a cornerstone for regional tournaments that bring thousands of athletes and families to Columbus each year. Turf surfaces reduce maintenance costs, minimize weather disruptions, and significantly decrease the risk of tournament cancellations, maximizing economic impact for area hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
Former Parks Director Mark Jones was also recognized for initiating Columbus’s tournament programming years earlier. Special acknowledgment was given to Eric Frey, Executive Director of Administration for the City of Columbus, who provided interim leadership during a departmental transition.
Columbus Parks and Recreation staff played a central role throughout the project. Associate Director of Sports Brady Buckley led the construction effort, navigating complex challenges with determination. Athletic Facilities Supervisor Taylor Henson and his team contributed heavily to design, operational planning, and on‐site coordination.
