New City of Columbus golf cart ordinance takes effect Monday

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Columbus Police Department reminds residents that the new golf cart and UTV ordinance goes into effect this Monday, June 1. 

map is available on the CPD website to help illustrate the main roads where golf carts and UTVs are prohibited. Note that golf carts and UTVs can cross these main roads at perpendicular intersections, but cannot travel down them.   

Here are some general rules about the operation of golf carts and UTVs in the city: 

  • You must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver's license   
  • Vehicles must be insured
  • Vehicles can be driven on most streets where the speed limit is 30 mph or less (some exceptions)
  • All passengers must remain seated
  • Open alcohol containers are prohibited
  • Dirt bikes, ATVs, and snowmobiles are not permitted
