COLUMBUS, Ind. - Local pet owners can now nominate their furry, scaly, or feathered companions to become the first pet mayor of Columbus, as part of a new fundraiser benefiting IU Columbus student scholarships and Columbus Animal Care Services.
Pet nominations are open now through March 20. The cost is $30, or $50 if you’d like to add a campaign yard sign. IU Columbus students receive a $10 discount.
“No paw-litical experience is required!” said Assistant Director of Development Brittany Gray, with a laugh. “We’re looking forward to seeing all of the adorable candidates.”
She added, “Most importantly, this fun competition helps pay for scholarships for IU Columbus students and also supports Columbus Animal Care Services.”
Voting will take place April 1-20; votes are $1 each ($5 minimum).
The first Columbus Pet Mayor will be named on April 22 as part of this year’s IU Day celebration, which includes a volunteer day of service and Arbor Day planting event, the annual Vice Chancellor’s Academic Honors Convocation, and the South Central Indiana Region IU Alumni Association’s Class of 2026 Grad Bash.
All pets are welcome to run for office: dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rabbits, rodents, and other well-behaved household companions. Pets must reside in Bartholomew County or be owned by an IU Columbus student.
Submit your pet’s nomination and review the full contest rules at columbuspetmayor.com.
