COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Bartholomew County area was hit with two rounds of thunderstorms on Monday. Rain and storms started late Monday afternoon and evening, and then a second, more severe system developed late Monday night.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Tornado Warning for Bartholomew and Brown Counties at 11:51 p.m. as radar indicated a storm capable of producing a tornado between Nashville and Columbus moving east at 50 mph (see map above).
NWS lifted the Warning at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday. A tornado touchdown has not yet been reported. Until daylight hits, authorities do not know the extent of any damage. Some tree limbs and power lines were reported down throughout the county.
Severe weather affected many residents in south-central and central Indiana during the storms. Duke Energy reported almost 20,000 customers statewide without power at 2 a.m. on Tuesday. By 4:30 a.m., the number was down to about 12,000.
After the first round of storms on Monday afternoon, Bartholomew County REMC said about 60 members were without power, primarily in the Shadow Creek area.
Checking the power outage maps at 4:45 a.m., Bartholomew County REMC shows four customers without power, while Duke Energy indicates all of its customers in Bartholomew County have power.
