Town of Edinburgh to pass utility credit card fees to customers

EDINBURGH, Ind. — The Edinburgh Town Council voted at its August 31 meeting to stop absorbing credit card and online transaction fees for utility payments, passing those costs directly to customers beginning this fall.

Last year alone, credit card processing and online payment fees cost the town nearly $200,000. Under the new policy, residents paying online or with a credit card will see a $1.25 online portal fee along with a 3.75% credit card processing charge (with a $2.50 minimum fee for amounts under $67).

For residents looking to avoid the additional charges, free payment options remain available. Utility customers can continue to pay fee-free by dropping off cash or checks in person or via the town dropbox, mailing a check, or setting up direct bank withdrawals.
