Struggling to get out of bed? Science says you’re smart.

A 2009 study done by Elsevier has resurfaced and is getting enough attention to make you feel better.

The study “Why Night Owls Are More Intelligent” was published in 2009 by authors Satoshi Kanazawa and Kaja Perina, and it states that being in control of when you’re going to sleep and waking up is a sign of intelligence. The snooze button is a relatively new invention that evolution never prepared us for, so being able to hit snooze and adapt to this “new way” of living and sleeping means you’re more intellectual.

Kanazawa and Perina argue that by ignoring the rule of getting up as soon as your alarms sounds – acting on what your body needs instead – means you’re more likely to follow your ambitions and tackle your problems yourself, ultimately making you more creative and independent.

A similar study conducted in 1998 by the University of Southampton, looked at the socioeconomic situations of 1,229 people in correlation with their sleeping patterns. That study showed that the people who went to bed after 11 p.m. and woke up after 8 a.m. earned more money and enjoyed a happier lifestyle.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I’m going to bed.
