COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to a small fire at a westside apartment complex on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to 4851 Pine Ride Dr., Westwood Pines Apartments, at 10:52 a.m. after reports of a garage fire, per CFD’s Capt. Mike Wilson.
When crews arrived, they noted that a sprinkler in a ground-level detached garage had been activated and there was evidence of a small fire. Firefighters found cardboard boxes, containing various new home appliance items and new home décor materials, that were damaged by the fire. Authorities learned that the garage unit was used as a storage and maintenance garage for the apartment complex.
The cause is under investigation. The sprinkler head that activated is close to where investigators believe to be the area of origin. CFD said that the sprinkler system worked as designed and played a significant role in reducing fire extension to the structure as well as limiting property damage.
No structural damage resulted from the fire. Damages to the contents of the garage are estimated at $3000. There were no injuries.
