COLUMBUS, Ind – The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) has announced Howeler+Yoon, a Boston-based architectural firm, as its selection to design the new elementary school on the west side of town.

This decision, approved by the BCSC Board of Trustees on April 15, underscores BCSC’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the architectural legacy that Columbus is known for, particularly within its educational institutions.

A 16-member committee composed of BCSC administrators, teachers, a student, and community members made the determination. The committee reviewed proposals from four firms nominated by the Cummins Architecture Program, ultimately choosing Howeler+Yoon for their innovative and child-centric approach to design.

The new school is an integral part of BCSC’s Envision 2030 facilities plan, which involves extensive renovations across the district and emphasizes the corporation’s forward-looking educational vision.

Dr. Brett Boezeman, BCSC’s Director of Operations, highlighted the design firm’s alignment with BCSC’s values, noting, “Eric Howeler’s vision of designing through the eyes of a child not only inspired the committee but resonated deeply within our community. Howler+Yoon’s approach of being a collaborator and a synthesizer will bring a fresh perspective to our new educational space.”

The new school represents the district’s 12th elementary and its first since 1982. It is expected to cost about $60 million and is projected to serve around 650 students, accommodating the city’s expansion to the west and south.

The project also includes the appointment of Taylor Bros Construction and Pepper Construction as construction managers, with a dedicated focus on ensuring top-tier construction standards for the $1.5 million project.
