Whiteland motorcycle accident takes life of Shelbyville teen

WHITELAND, Ind – The Whiteland Police Department (WPD) and assisting agencies responded to a two-vehicle accident on N. US 31 and Country Wood Drive on Tuesday, at around 9:30 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a motorcycle was heading north on US 31 when a truck allegedly tried to cross traffic onto US 31 from Country Wood Drive. The motorcycle crashed into the truck.

The operator of the motorcycle, Drew Shrader, 19, of Shelbyville, succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision. The other driver, Jeffrey Cobbs, 62, of New Whiteland, was uninjured and was taken to the Whiteland Police Station for an investigation. He was later arrested for possible intoxication while operating a vehicle causing death.

Alcohol and/or speed are thought to be factors in the crash. Accident reconstructionists are continuing their investigation.

WPD Chief of Police Rick Shipps stresses to motorists with warmer weather here be aware that more motorcycles are on the roadways and be conscientious of them for the safety of all traveling.
