SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — A Shelbyville Police Department (SDP) officer is being recognized after he helped save a driver from a burning car, according to an article by Fox59.

An SPD media release sent Tuesday revealed that Officer Devin Moore was headed to an off-duty assignment at a school on February 20 when he drove by a serious car accident on Interstate 74 near the 121-mile marker.

The car had veered off the roadway, crashed into a tree, and then caught fire. SPD said in the article that, upon seeing the accident, Moore took “swift and courageous” action to help those involved.

The department stated the officer was able to pull over and help remove both the passenger and the driver from the car mere moments before it became fully engulfed in flames.

While the driver of the car survived, thanks in part to Moore’s rescue, the male passenger was unfortunately pronounced deceased at the scene. SPD said that Moore’s actions are a “testament to the dedication and valor” exhibited by its officers.
