COLUMBUS, Ind. – Residents can register their children for the annual Columbus Police Department (CPD) and Columbus Fire Department (CFD) Youth Academies beginning this Wednesday on the Columbus Police Department website.

The academies are June 17 and 18 for 6-8 year old kids, and June 19-21 for 9-12 year old children. During this camp, the students will participate in several “hands-on” activities including obstacle courses, physical fitness exercises, defensive tactics, fire safety, and fire prevention. Fire trucks will be on hand for the students to inspect and learn more about.

Campers will have a chance to talk with members of the CPD SWAT, Hostage Negotiators, Swift Water Rescue, and Bomb teams. Police dogs will also be on hand for a demonstration.

The academy concludes with a graduation ceremony that family and friends can attend.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the previous academies and the limited space, children will be selected through a lottery system, therefore registration does not guarantee a child’s spot in camp. Registration ends on May 13 at noon. The parents of the selected campers will be notified by email no later than Friday, May 24.

The camp registration is free and is open to Bartholomew County residents. For more information about the camps or sign-up process, click here.
