NORTH VERNON, Ind. – During the early morning hours on Tuesday, the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) began investigating a report of possible intimidation by a suspect.
Sgt. Amis learned that a female had allegedly been receiving threatening messages from an ex-boyfriend. The male subject, Steven Burton, 46, of Columbus, had purportedly sent several photos and videos displaying a firearm.
While the deputy was speaking with the woman, he said the suspect continued to actively send death threats to the female through texts.
JCSO was able to locate an address on Whippoorwill Drive, in Seymour, where the man was currently staying. It was also learned that Burton had several active arrest warrants out of Bartholomew County.
Jennings County and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Seymour Police Department officers responded to the residence in an attempt to locate the subject. They found him in a garage on the property. When Burton refused to exit, law enforcement forced entry.
While attempting to place Burton into custody a brief struggle occurred. He was ultimately arrested and taken to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for evaluation.
The suspect was then transported to the Jennings County Jail where he was charged with the outstanding Bartholomew County warrants of Invasion of Privacy with a prior conviction-two counts (Level 6 Felony), Domestic Battery (Misdemeanor), and Conversion (Misdemeanor). New charges included Intimidation with a deadly weapon (Level 5 Felony) and Resisting Law Enforcement (Misdemeanor).
