COLUMBUS, Ind. – The City of Columbus Engineering Department has announced that Lowell Road is officially open. After a long wait, traffic is again moving from U.S. 31 through County Road 200W and beyond. Portions of the road have been closed since May 28.

The Lowell Road Reconstruction Project began after Memorial Day Weekend and involved widening the roadway from the west side of U.S. 31 to just past County Road 200W.

With the increase in housing development, Lowell Road has become the alternate route to and from the west side of town. Because of heavier traffic volumes and the road’s age and condition, the City of Columbus determined the road needed to be safer.

The $3 million federally funded road project added a 10-foot multi-use side path on the south side of Lowell Road and a five-foot concrete sidewalk on the north side. Lowell Road was expanded to three lanes, with the center lane designated as a turn lane.

There are a few final project items to be addressed, so drivers may continue to see crews in the area and experience occasional lane restrictions.

The City said, “We recognize this construction project presented travel challenges for many citizens. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as this frequently traveled connection to the westside was improved to provide a safer and more accessible road for vehicles and pedestrians.”
