COLUMBUS, Ind. – In anticipation of the upcoming winter weather, the City of Columbus will open Donner Center as a warming center for the community on Wednesday, December 11, and Thursday, December 12. The center will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days, providing a safe and warm refuge for those in need.

Animals are welcome but must be kept in crates and will be housed in a designated area of the facility. Columbus Animal Care Services will provide the crates.

After 5 p.m., Brighter Days will offer shelter services. To ensure access to these resources, Routes 1 and 2 of ColumBUS Transit will stop at Donner Park from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Only service animals are allowed on city buses.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather statement that snow showers are expected to develop on Wednesday afternoon. These conditions may cause brief periods of heavy snow, whiteout conditions, wind gusts over 40 mph, and flash freezing on surfaces. Residents are advised to exercise caution as conditions can deteriorate rapidly, especially during the evening commute.

Here are some tips for staying warm during winter weather:
• Wear multiple layers of clothing to stay insulated
• Keep dry to maintain body heat
• Limit outdoor exposure and seek shelter when needed
• Ensure your home is properly insulated and draft-free
• Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, and water
