COLUMBUS, Ind. – The City of Columbus has received a grant from the Indiana Department of Health for a temporary safety demonstration project at the intersection of 27th Street and Home Avenue.
The project includes colored pavement markings, curb extensions, and delineator posts to increase pedestrian safety by slowing traffic and improving driver awareness. The intersection is used by more than 4,000 students attending adjacent schools, as well as additional pedestrians and bicyclists accessing nearby neighborhoods, restaurants, and the People Trail system to the north.
This grant-funded project allows the City to test how well these design elements improve safety and inform permanent design decisions in the future.
Once work is completed, community members will have the opportunity to share feedback on the project through a survey on the City’s Bike Walk Columbus website and at two open houses on Tuesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 21.
The project is a collaboration of the City of Columbus Engineering, Planning, and Public Works Departments, with additional support from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, Columbus Regional Health, and the Columbus Police Department.
