COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to a blaze at a residence in the 5100 block of Yellowwood Drive during the noon hour on Tuesday. A family dog was rescued from the burning home as firefighters battled the flames and extinguished the fire.

Fire crews were called to Yellowwood Drive at around 12:15 p.m. after a neighbor reported smoke coming from a home.

When firefighters entered the house, the family dog ran out through the door. Two Columbus Police Department officers secured the animal and placed it in a patrol car. The residents were not at home.

Dense smoke was visible as CFD began working on the fire. Once inside, crews encountered flames within the living space and the attic. They quickly brought the blaze under control. Additional firefighters searched the home and confirmed that the house was not occupied.

Fire investigators are working to identify the cause. Damage to the home’s living space, attic, and roof will likely result in the occupant’s displacement from the residence. No monetary damage assessment was provided during the early stage of the investigation.

CFD investigators contacted the owners and are working with them as part of the fire investigation, as well as addressing an emergency shelter needs assessment.

There were no injuries to any fire personnel or the dog.
