COLUMBUS, Ind. – A standoff on Iowa Street lasted nearly three hours, but ended peacefully early Monday morning when the suspect was apprehended by members of the Columbus Police Department (CPD) SWAT Team. Just before 5 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Iowa Street after a report of a man, armed with a knife, had broken into a home.
According to authorities at CPD, Tyrrice Degraffenreid allegedly entered the home which had seven children inside. Four of the kids were able to exit the house, however, three still remained inside. Degraffenreid was reportedly the father of two of those children. Officers confirmed that the residence had a valid protective order prohibiting Degraffenreid from being there.
Officers reportedly made contact with the man, but say he refused to leave the home. SWAT team members were brought to the scene and they were able to enter the home and escort the three remaining children back to safety. Law enforcement located the suspect hiding in a bedroom and he was then taken into custody with the assistance of a CPD canine.
Degraffenreid was later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of residential entry and violation of a protective order.
