City of Columbus begins renovations at Fire Stations 3 and 5

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The City of Columbus has initiated comprehensive renovation and repair projects at fire stations 3 and 5 to rectify moisture issues, remediate mold, and modernize heating/air-conditioning systems. These efforts underscore the city's commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for its firefighters.

At Station 5 on Goeller Court, crews are currently tackling a multi-phased restoration. Exterior repairs, including roof panel replacement and balcony waterproofing, are slated for completion by September 1. Following extensive demolition to remove moisture-damaged materials, the building will undergo professional chemical treatment and mold control. Before interior reconstruction begins, the station must pass third-party air-quality testing, expected by September 15. Full re-occupancy is anticipated in October.

Simultaneously, Station 3 on Gladstone Avenue is scheduled for a full roof replacement. Following a bid opening on August 11, the city expects the project to span 60 days, with completion targeted for November.

These improvements follow recent air quality assessments by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). While testing across the city’s six fire stations revealed no active mold growth, inspectors noted moisture-related concerns, particularly at Station 5. The city has pledged to continue remediation, regular monitoring, and adherence to all health recommendations.

"Our focus remains on ensuring safe, healthy working environments for all City employees," officials stated, affirming the city's long-term dedication to maintaining resilient facilities.
