COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Common Council of the City of Columbus voted unanimously on second reading to amend Chapter 5.30 of the municipal code, expanding the boundaries of the downtown Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA).
The amended ordinance formally extends the social district's southeastern boundary to encompass The Inn at Irwin Gardens. Because the extension is within 200 feet of nearby institutional properties, the city secured formal letters of consent from Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church before the final vote.
The updated ordinance also codifies previous board actions incorporating several local establishments into the district, including The Forge on 4th, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and St. Denis Wine Books & Wonders.
Under Indiana state statute, municipalities can designate up to seven distinct DORA districts. City officials indicated that future requests from establishments located farther from the initial core boundary would likely be evaluated as potential separate districts rather than further expanding the current footprint.
