Governor Mike Braun declares a statewide disaster emergency

STATE OF INDIANA- Governor Mike Braun has declared a statewide disaster emergency due to the flooding, severe weather, tornadic activity and a derecho that impacted the state beginning on Aug. 11, 2026.

In response to this severe weather, the State Emergency Operations Center elevated the activation from Daily Operations (IV) to Emergency Conditions (III). Over the last 48 hours, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, in collaboration with partner state agencies, has led the state’s response efforts. 

- IDHS’ Office of Emergency Communications has deployed mobile radio towers.

- IDHS has deployed three recovery teams to Northwest Indiana to begin assessing damage, and an Incident Management Team to Franklin County to assist with the response efforts to the flooding.

- A number of shelters have been stood up throughout the state by the American Red Cross and other partners.

- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has deployed boats and swift water rescue gear to flooded areas.

- The Indiana Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Correction, is actively removing debris and monitoring roadways for flooding. Preparations continue to be made as widespread flooding persists.

- The Indiana National Guard has been mobilized to assist Northwest Indiana and are also prepared to assist with evacuations throughout the state have been impacted by flooding.

- The state is continuing to monitor the power outages and is working with utility companies to remove any debris to ensure areas are accessible to be restored.
