Greenwood Fire Department achieves ISO Class 1 Rating

GREENWOOD, Ind.— The Greenwood Fire Department is proud to announce that it has achieved an ISO Class 1 Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating, placing the department among the highest-rated fire protection organizations in the country.

The Class 1 designation represents an exceptional level of fire protection capability and reflects the dedication, professionalism, training, and preparation of the men and women of the Greenwood Fire Department.

The ISO Public Protection Classification evaluates a community's fire protection capabilities across several areas, including fire department operations, staffing, training, equipment, emergency communications, water supply, and overall fire protection infrastructure. Achieving a Class 1 rating requires an organization to demonstrate excellence across these critical areas.

“This achievement is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our entire organization,” said Greenwood Fire Chief Jayme Washel. “A Class 1 rating does not happen because of one person or one division. It is the result of firefighters, officers, dispatchers, support personnel, city leadership, and community partners working together with a common commitment to providing the highest level of service possible.”

The rating also recognizes the importance of the community's investment in fire protection. The Greenwood Fire Department's ability to maintain highly trained personnel, modern equipment, reliable emergency communications, effective water-supply infrastructure, and comprehensive operational capabilities contributed to the department's success.

“While the Class 1 rating is an important recognition, our focus has never been on a number or a
designation,” Chief Washel said. “Our focus is being prepared to respond when the citizens of Greenwood need us most. This rating validates the work our members do every day to maintain that level of readiness.”

The Greenwood Fire Department also recognizes that achieving Class 1 status is not the end of the process. Maintaining the highest level of fire protection requires continued investment, training, evaluation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
