YOUNG SEEKS SECOND TERM
Bloomington Republican Todd Young officially announced his re-election campaign on Thursday. The congressman who covers Seymour and much of Jackson County, already has democratic challengers, both of them retired military. Seymour Tribune reports that retired Brigadier General Jonathan George of Bedford and retired Colonel John W. Tilford of Bloomington, have filed declarations of candidacy.
STUDENT POSSIBLY WITH HANDGUN CAUSES LOCKDOWN
Columbus East and North High Schools were under lockdown Friday morning after several students reported another student in possession of a handgun. Lt. Matt Myers of the Columbus Police Department says police were able to locate the student at Columbus East. He was in the C4 program which is why police weren’t sure which school he was at. The investigation is ongoing no weapon at this point has been found.
COLTS INTRODUCE PAGANO
Indianapolis Colts Introduced Chuck Pagano as their new head coach Thursday afternoon. The former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator said on day one he wants to build trust. The foundation of all goals and dreams will be built on that principle, according to Pagano. Colts Owner Jim Irsay said they need somebody who added toughness and leadership. Pagano will take over a team who was 2-14 in 2011.
EVENING ASSAULT INJURES COLUMBUS WOMAN
Police in Columbus are searching for a male suspect who assaulted a woman outside her home Thursday evening. The man who is described as 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, sucker punched the woman in the 1400 block of West Paula drive and then fought with her as she tried to escape. The woman blacked out and the suspect was gone when she came to. She was treated for cuts and bruises at Columbus Regional Hospital.
LIBRARY TARGETS MAY REFERENDUM
Johnson County library will spend the next four months appealing to property owners for a new $29 million downtown Franklin library branch. The JCPL board voted to set May as the referendum time for voters deciding on whether they want to publicly finance construction of the library. Beverly Martin, Director of the library system believes the new branch is long overdue and that surveys conducted by the library indicate upwards of 66 percent of voters support the library proposal.
GREENWOOD COMPANY'S EXPANSION IS OFF THE GROUND
A $40 million expansion of Endress+Hauser in Greenwood that started in 2008 is finally coming to fruition, bringing hundreds of jobs. President and CEO of Johnson County Development Corporation, Cheryl Morphew, says the expansion speaks highly of the confidence level the company has for Greenwood. Morphew says the company is looking to hire a broad range of employees including highly technical positions and manufacturing jobs.
CURBSIDE RECYCLING MAY BECOME REALITY IN COLUMBUS
Curbside recycling could become a reality in Columbus, but most likely not until next year. Mayor Kristen Brown says she will put together a committee to discuss the service. Recycling was brought up by both candidates during last fall’s mayoral election. Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District in Columbus will take recyclables until the institution of curbside pickup.
NEW FEES COULD BE ADDED ON GREENWOOD UTILITY BILL
Greenwood households would be charged $5 a month or more to prevent flooding and improve storm water utilities under a city proposal. The fee would help a new storm water utility reduce pollution from streams and clear debris. One major project that could be funded is a $6.5 million dollar drainage basin that could reduce flooding problems in the old town area.
